I Love Rain

The color of rain.

Many times when I’m visiting friends or relatives, they invariably apologize about the weather if it’s not bright and sunny outside.  I love bad weather. When it’s raining, the colors become really saturated and grab your attention. Unless you’re shooting dramatic sunrises and sunsets, sun and blue skies rarely add anything to a color photograph. Patchy sun is particularly difficult to photograph in color because you usually end up with an image where the highlights are too bright and the shadows are too dark. And, blue skies may be wonderful to walk under or lie under but aren’t particularly photogenic.  They are usually much brighter than your foreground so you have to use neutral density graduated filters or blend exposures to capture them properly.

After a serious drought where our reservoirs were about 50% of there normal capacity, we’ve been have a lot of rain and I’m very happy.

  3. This is wonderful Dan. I can almost feel the damp forrest air.

  4. I love this, Dan. The moss practically leaps off the screen. Feels like the tree is just radiating with energy.

  5. Thanks, Laurent. I only shot this a month ago and I’m still pretty jazzed about it.
